Curvature Dependency of Surface Tension in Multicomponent Systems

چکیده
The effect of curvature on the surface tension of droplets and bubbles in both single and multicomponent systems is modeled using the basic equations from classical thermodynamics. The three expressions used in our work are the Gibbs adsorption equation for multicomponent systems, the relation between the surface tension at the surface of tension and the distance parameter , and the Macleod–Sugden equation for surface tension and its extension to multicomponent systems. The Peng–Robinson equation of state is used to describe the bulk phases. We also assume that the surface tension expression remains valid in terms of the properties of the bulk phases for both flat and curved interfaces. For a flat surface we have developed a rigorous thermodynamics approach for the calculation of the Tolman distance parameter. For curved surfaces, the results from our model reveal a decrease in surface tension with curvature in bubbles and a nonmonotonic behavior in droplets for single-component systems. Our predictions are in good agreement with the literature results when the interface is described using the framework of the density functional theory by three different groups. For multicomponent systems, the results show that the surface tension in a bubble, although monotonic with curvature, can increase or decrease in a large bubble depending on the temperature and composition of the mixture. In a droplet, the surface tension can have a nonmonotonic behavior similar to that of single-component systems. © 2005 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 52: 311–322, 2006

متن کاملTHE EFFECT OF OILFIELD CHEMICALS ON THE SURFACE TENSION OF SURFACTANT SYSTEMS
Treated sea water is the most significant source of water and surfactant floods. The various chemicals employed in treatment plants should be compatible with surfactant systems. Based on surface tension experiments, the activity of these chemicals is examined over a wide range of concentrations in different solutions, including distillated water, sea water by using three types of surfactant mix...
متن کاملA New Surface Tension Model for Prediction of Interaction Energy between Components and Activity Coefficients in Binary Systems
In this work, we develop a correlative model based on the surface tension data in order to calculate thermodynamic parameters, such as interaction energy between components (Uij), activity coefficients and etc. In the new approach, by using Li et al. (LWW) model, a three-parameter surface tension equation is derived for liquid mixtures. The surface tension data of 54 aqueous and 73 non-aqueous ...

The variation of energies associated with soft matter interfaces where surface inhomogeneities are present. These energies include the total bending and splay energy, the variable surface tension energy, a coupling energy between the total curvature and an underlying surface concentration field, the energy due to an external field, and a phase segregation energy. When considering these energies...
متن کاملOptovibrometry: tracking changes in the surface tension and viscosity of multicomponent droplets in real-time.
An instrument was developed for measuring real time changes in the surface tension and viscosity of multicomponent droplets of miscible liquids and other soft materials. Droplets containing glycerol and water were supported on superamphiphobic surfaces and vibrated by applying a short mechanical impulse. Laser light was refracted through the droplets and allowed to fall on the surface of a phot...
